SCHOOL AIMS
Chadderton Hall Junior School aims to provide a happy yet disciplined environment of learning within which every pupil here can thrive academically as well as mature personally and socially.
We believe that pupils fulfill their potential when they feel valued and expectations are clearly spelt out. High standards of work, behaviour and dress are, therefore, required at all times and are seen as part of our caring ethos. As a caring school we also recognise a wide range of other achievements so that each and every one of our pupils can feel valued through contributing to the life of the school.
The school constantly reviews the curriculum and teaching styles so that we can deliver a balanced and relevant educational experience in the classroom that will prepare our pupils for life in the twenty-first century. Conveying to pupils a sense of enjoyment of learning is an essential component of this experience so that they will come to regard education as a life-long process. Parents play an important, if not crucial role in this process.
The partnership between home and school has a great bearing on pupils' attitudes and achievements. For this reason we encourage parents to involve themselves as much as possible in their child's education and we are committed to the early and varied involvement of parents.
PUPIL AIMS
Pupils are expected:
- to give their personal best and achieve maximum potential;
- to experience and enjoy success;
- to develop qualities of confidence, self-esteem, respect for others, courtesy, co-operation, tolerance and understanding;
- to cultivate skills, knowledge and competencies required in order to function successfully in a highly technological and rapidly changing multi-cultural society;
- to gain appreciation of the relevance of education to the world of work and leisure;
- to develop a sense of community, particularly with respect to our immediate neighbours.
PUPIL ADMISSIONS
Our pupil admission number was 50 but in 2002 we were granted a variation to our admission number from 50 to 60. We are a successful school, which is now a two-form entry junior school throughout the school.

Recently they have contributed warmly and willingly to causes such as 'Jeans for Genes', Denim for Diabetes, National Children’s’ Homes, Child Victims of Crime, Poppy Day, The Samaritans Purse, N S P C C, Dr Barnados, Blue Peter Appeals, and Comic Relief.
HOMEWORK
Homework is set for every pupil. A timetable is sent home at the beginning of term indicating the day homework will be sent home, the type of work, how long it should take and when it must come back to school. Homework in Year 3 differs greatly from that of Year 6. Each pupil has a diary to record their homework tasks and there is a section for you to comment. We value your contributions.
HOME SCHOOL AGREEMENT
This is a Government initiative, which has been successfully introduced at school. It sets out the school's expectations for pupils and parents and through consultation the second part of the agreement sets out the parents' and pupils' expectations of the school.
MOBILE TELEPHONES
In line with LEA guidance and the school’s own behaviour policy, Mobile Telephones are not permitted in school at any time. Further details can be obtained from the School Office.
PARENT TO PARENT GROUP
There is an active parent group who raise funds on behalf of the school. Please offer your help and support the functions throughout the year. New workers and new ideas are always welcome.
LIBRARY
We have a well-stocked library, organised according to the Dewey System and computerised. The pupil's act as Librarians for their respective classes.
As the school holds a ‘GOLD’ TOOTH FRIENDLY AWARD, we encourage the pupils to donate a Birthday Book to the library rather than bring in sweets to celebrate their birthdays. Each book has a certificate inside the front cover showing the pupil’s name and class. The weekly NEWSLETTER identifies the birthday book pupils.
SCHOOL MEALS
Pupils are encouraged to stay at school for lunch. The school has a ‘Heartbeat Award’ for producing healthy and nutritionally balanced meals. A packed lunch may be brought from home and eaten in the dining room, but no bottles, cans or fizzy drinks please. Pupils must remain on school premises throughout the mid-day break. A full week's dinner money is £8.00 and should be brought to school each Monday morning. Cheques should be made payable to O M B C and marked on the back with the child's name and class. Lunchtime Organisers are employed to look after the children during the dinner break.
WATER BOTTLES
Each pupil is supplied with new sport water bottle at the beginning of term which they can have refilled on a regular basis during the school day from the plumbed in mains water filters situated around school.
SCHOOL FUND
Like many schools, Chadderton Hall has a School Fund, which is used to finance many desirable activities not funded by the Local Authority. This fund is used to subsidise the cost of pupils' educational visits and field trips, prizes for school, drama and musical productions and visiting live theatre groups. If you wish to make a contribution please send these in on a Monday morning.
THE SCHOOL'S CHARGING POLICY
The charging policy of the school is in line with the basic policy laid down by the 1988 Education Reform Act. Parents will be expected to provide uniform for their children and the basic equipment needed for school work - pens, pencils, rules, rubbers etc., if the ones provided by school are lost or broken.
Parents cannot be charged for books or equipment used in lessons or educational trips made during school hours. However, we can and do, ask for voluntary contributions from time to time. Parents can be charged for a trip or visit outside school hours for board and lodging on a residential trip. Charges can also be made for any damage to or loss of school property e.g. windows, books, caused by pupil's negligence or maliciousness.
However, even for trips within the school day parents can be asked to make a voluntary contribution to the cost but a pupil cannot be excluded from such a trip if the parents refuse to contribute. It may happen, however, that a trip would have to be cancelled if insufficient voluntary contributions were made. We shall continue to raise money for School Fund on a voluntary basis.
HEALTH AND SAFETY
The school buys into the LEA’s Health & Safety Scheme which includes regular updating of many Health and Safety directives. Regular risk assessments are undertaken to comply with current legislation.
BRIEF HISTORY OF THE SCHOOL
Chadderton Hall Junior School has provided education for the children of this area since 1961. It is a compact building of traditional design, but in September 2002,
an extension of 4 new classrooms were opened to double the size of the School. The school has a multi-purpose hall used for PE, Assemblies, School Meals. A further room, known as The Verity Gallery, was opened in Spring 2006 and is used for music and art lessons, small teaching groups and a meeting place for parents and Governors.
The school caters for children between the ages of 7 and 11. Most of our Year 3 children transfer from St Matthew's Infant School and at the end of Year 6 the majority of children transfer to North Chadderton Comprehensive School. Throughout the year there are formal and informal transitional links between our Year 6 pupils and North Chadderton High School and Year 2 pupils from the feeder schools.
TEACHING AND LEARNING STYLES
The school places great emphasis on the use of a range of teaching and learning styles, which are designed to stimulate and stretch each individual pupil. Consequently, staff are constantly extending the range of methods they use to include such approaches as Flexible Learning and Supported Self-Study and ensure that procedures such as Profiling and Recording are integrated into the learning process.
EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES
The principles of equal opportunities have always been accepted as fundamental within Chadderton Hall School and an equal opportunities school policy has been written covering aspects of race, gender and special needs. Registers are desegregated and assembles multi-cultural.
SCHOOL RULES AND DISCIPLINE
High standards of behaviour, care consideration and respect for others are expected of all pupils. We value good behaviour through our house system.
Where behaviour is unacceptable a variety of sanctions may be applied. These include daily reports signed by parents and staff, loss of privileges, e.g. playtimes, lunchtimes and representing the school. A full copy of all the rules and regulations is given to each pupil on entry to the school and parents are asked to sign a form to acknowledge receipt.
CHILD PROTECTION
This school believes that the protection of children should be an integral part of the ethos of the school, and seeks to create an atmosphere in which children feel secure. The Head Teacher is the Child Protection Co-ordinator for the school and we are members of STRANGER DANGER, which is a telephone/fax early warning system between schools and the police. We do not encourage adults standing near the railings at break times or calling children over, as they do not understand the danger this puts them in. Please help us to maintain your child's safety by keeping away - grandparents please note!
COMMUNICATION
Parents are kept informed by letter of any closures, special events and various dates of importance. Your child will bring home a copy of the weekly NEWSLETTER, which is published each Friday. This contains items of interest, reminders of any special events and forthcoming events.
ATTENDANCE
Children are expected to attend regularly - in the case of absence telephone the school as soon as possible. Persistent absentees will receive a visit from the LEA Education Welfare Officers. The Governors interpret the Government's policy on unauthorized attendance and the school records this on your child's school report. Your child should always bring in a letter to cover an absence on their return to school.

PUNCTUALITY
We encourage setting a good example to your child on punctuality by ensuring your child is sent or brought to school on time. Children should be present on the school playground 5 minutes before the start of each session, including any children who go home for dinner. We will not accept any responsibility for children left unattended before 8.45am. Please try never to be late in picking your child up at the end of the day, as children become distressed. If there is an unavoidable delay, please notify the office as soon as possible and we will put your child's mind at rest.
After school:-
To prevent possible vandalism, graffiti, illegal entry and theft, we ask that parents do not allow their children to play on school premises after school and at the weekends. Vandalism and theft can remove hundreds of pounds from our school budget, which should be spent on improving your child's education. Please remember the school pays for broken windows, repairs to the roof, and the fabric of the building etc.
Complaints:-
All complaints relating to the curriculum and indeed any other matters should be discussed initially with the Head Teacher or Deputy Head Teacher. If these discussions do not reach a satisfactory conclusion then there is a formal complaints procedure, which can be implemented. Details may be obtained from the school.
Confidential Information:-
Each year every family is asked to complete a general admission/contact form which may require amendment during the academic year and your child's stay at Chadderton Hall. This form provides essential information such as emergency contact for illness/accidents. These personal details, including any information on your child's background may help the teacher to handle any changes in your child's home circumstances. Any information given is treated confidentially, only passed on to those who need to know and conforms to the guidelines under the Data Protection Act.
Lastly, there must be good relationships formed between everyone associated with Chadderton Hall, parents, governors, children and staff. We will do our best, it won't be perfect, but if you try so will we.
CHADDERTON HALL 250 SCHOOL LOTTERY
A monthly school lottery was launched in May 2006 and is proving to be very popular with parents and their families. To date the lottery has raised over £2000.00 towards school projects.
If you would like further details of how to join the Chadderton Hall 250 School Lottery please enquire at the office. The cost is £48.00 per year which can paid in one cheque or by standing order at £4.00 per month.

THE NATIONAL CURRICULUM
As from September 2000 children have been taught from the new national curriculum. There are eleven subjects, divided into two sections; core and foundation.
Core Foundation
English Geography
Moths History
Science Design & Technology
I C T Art and Craft
R E Music
Physical Education
P H S CE
The Curriculum
English is taught through the National Literacy Strategy and cross-curricular links are made with history, geography, science, design and technology to name but a few. Our particular focus in the 2007 Academic year is the S.E.A.L Project, but additional Literacy Support is given to all pupils in all year groups.
Moths is taught through the National Numeracy Strategy. Children take part in a daily lesson, which consist of a mental starter, a main activity and a plenary session - which reinforces the learning objective of the day.
Science the children follow the Q C A scheme of work for science, which was written for the National Curriculum in 2000. Each term, each year group has quite specific areas to study with expected learning outcomes.
I C T – By September 2007 we will have a new I C T suite after relocating our library in The Verity Gallery. The suite will have an Interactive Whiteboard where teachers and pupils can access the internet, listen to a CD or DVD etc, send e-mails and use the networked computers for a lesson. Each classroom also has an Interactive Whiteboard and a wireless PC . CC4G (Computer Club 4 Girls) is a government initiative, which runs three times a week for year 5 and 6 girls.
We have strong links for ICT with North Chadderton Business College and continue to benefit from the services of their Community ICT Technician, Mark Unsworth.
RE is taught from the L E A agreed Syllabus. We study Christian, Muslim and the Hindu faiths. A selection of festivals is studied which include the Jewish religion. Regular weekly lessons are experienced by the pupils, dealing with leaders of major faiths, special books and festivals, and places of worship, and wherever possible visits to places of worship are organised. Collective worship is a daily act, either in the school hall or in a classroom. Parents have the right to withdraw their child from Religious Education and collective worship.
Geography - We follow the Q C A scheme, each year group following a quite detailed course each term. Every child is assessed against the learning outcomes for each unit.
History again we follow the Q C A scheme with each year group following a detailed course of study. Children are measured against the learning outcomes.
Music - All pupils engage in one lesson of music each week. Various elements of music are taken into account such as performing, listening, and appreciating singing and composing. We offer music lessons in woodwind, violin, guitar and keyboard, although these lessons do have to be paid for, the charge for 2007/08 will be £60.00 per term.
Physical Education - The pupils take lessons in Dance, Gymnastics, Games and Athletics. Outdoor activities are offered to the children of Year 6 in the form of a residential week-end in the Summer Term at a well equipped centre in Cumbria.
Design & Technology - We follow the Q C A Scheme, which defines activities for each term for each year group, whether it is a focused practical task, a design and make, or an evaluation activity. There is a strong link with the Design & Technology department of North Chadderton High School next door.
Art and Craft - Each year group follows a course of study, which includes looking at the work of a famous artist, such as the sculptor Henry Moore, or the work of P Klee. The children work in paint and colour, line and structure and texture. We encourage 2D and 3D art work. The children's work is assessed against the learning outcomes. Again, we have very strong links with North Chadderton High School Art Department. Artwork is always well displayed around the school.
Personal Social Health and Citizenship Education is an important aspect of education. The staff encourage pupils to learn from one another, discuss ideas, work together on problem solving and decision-making exercises. Drama enables the pupils to explore their attitudes and values and become aware of their personal strengths and weaknesses. An example of where Drama is used might be moving on to high school - coping well with a larger community, or Y2 pupils settling into a new school. Our pupils are able to consider their physical and emotional development and to learn effective ways of managing relationships with people in and out of school. From September 2005 we embarked on the S.E.A.L Project for all year groups. Currently we have also developed a link with Oldham Theatre Workshop and hope to involve other theatres in the Manchester area from September 2007.
The children transferring to us from Key Stage 1, experience few problems however, some parents are particularly anxious. Throughout the year, but especially in the Summer term a closer liaison takes place between St Matthew's and our own School with informal daytime meetings in both schools and an induction evening where parents can look around the school, ask questions and meet the staff.
The same is true for our Year 6 pupils moving on to high school. Most of our pupils transfer to North Chadderton. Close curriculum links and extra curricular links have been developed between all the high schools. Some pupils transfer to The Bluecoat School, Crompton House, Royton & Crompton, The Radclyffe School and the Hulme Grammar Schools.
Learning Support - The school is fully committed to enabling all pupils to achieve the highest possible personal and academic standards. Pupils with special needs are assessed in order to determine their individual needs. Once this has been done an Individual Education Programme (I.E.P.) is written for them. Help is provided on an individual or group basis and support given within classes. Our pupils are encouraged to make the most of their abilities and are given every opportunity to become more confident.
Special Education
At Chadderton Hall we believe all children are entitled to a broad, balanced, relevant and differentiated curriculum delivered in the most integrated way practicable. Chadderton Hall has a Special Needs Co-ordinator who has responsibility for the implementation of the Special Needs Policy and the co-ordination of educational provision for pupils with special needs. We value the knowledge, views and experience of parents of a child with special needs, and aim to keep parents fully informed at every stage of their child's development

A the time of going to press the above figures had not been published nationally.
A great deal has been written about the National Curriculum, but basically it is an ENTITLEMENT for each child. The National Curriculum has ASSESSMENT as its main focus and every subject is divided into levels: at age 7 (Y2) it is expected that a pupil will achieve a level 2 and at age 11 (Y6) an average child would be expected to achieve a level 4. However, each level is sub-divided into C, B, and A: i.e. 2C 2B 2A, 3C, 3B, 3A, 4c, 4B, 4A, 5.
Points are allocated to each part of the level. It is this system that allows teachers and schools to set targets for year groups, individual pupils and teachers. At Chadderton Hall, we have a tracking system in place showing the exact level each pupil has on entry in Y3, and most importantly, where we expect that pupil to be at the end of each term. An annual report is prepared for you in the Summer Term, showing the overall achievements of the past year. It also indicates targets for the forthcoming year.
